What Happened to the Family Beach Holiday?

We all have fond memories of those great family beach vacations, surfing, long walks on the beach with the whole family including the dog, and best of all the big breakfast rather than the quick bowl of cereal and a glass of juice.

What were those holidays that made time stand still and everyone got along. Mom really enjoyed cooking for all of us and Dad seemed to have time to sit and talk instead of the usual chit-chat he did later on his way out the door to work. I remember spending time even with my younger sister! It seemed different then, not the usual back pain that only got out of bed to make my day miserable.

There seemed to be an unwritten schedule for the day… get up with the sun, followed by a swim and some running along the beach like crazy. and then one of Mom’s monster breakfasts with fried bacon, fried eggs, thick-cut raisin toast, juice and maybe even a pancake or two thrown in, just in case we look hungry. This of course was followed by dads announcing where the surf was or where the fish were biting, which was very different from doing your homework.

My brothers and I usually opted for the surf which left dad to have some peace with the fish. Lunch seemed to skip us all, especially if the surf was good. Afternoons meant we were good for the watermelon fight, but I remember we ate more than we threw at each other. Little sisters were good targets for these watermelon seeds. Late afternoon was mom time and we all obeyed when asked to go for a late afternoon walk along the beach. Little did he know we were just working up an appetite for dinner. Or maybe he did.

I remember a little pizza place across the street from the beach where we would get a board game and do the family challenge while waiting for the pizzas. Funny how they always seemed to be the best pizzas ever.

Well, I have a family of my own now, and luckily we make the pilgrimage to the beach every year. My kids are teenagers now and our friends ask how we get them to move in with mom and dad. So here are my tips

• Choose your destination carefully. Not too many shops or distractions but if you have daughters then make sure there are some nearby. But NO malls.
• We let everyone invite a friend along. This added to the tribe and gave mom and dad a break as well
• Find a destination that isn’t TOO FAR from home. We set the limit at 2.5 hours as this allowed time to stop and rest, but not enough time for the breed to become restless and irritable. Also, the threat of sending one home was a very reasonable threat.
• Our best beach holidays have been in accommodation where the facilities felt very much like home, comfortable and plenty of space to lie down
• Do at least one great activity. for us something like sand boarding was always a winner, or maybe deep sea fishing. something memorable

There are many options to choose from. The main thing is to do it… and take the family. This beach vacation was the glue that held us all together. They made memories, broke down barriers and created networks of friends.
