5 Lessons From Eddie Murphy’s Daddy Day Care That Fathers Can And Should Implement Immediately
It’s amazing how little kids can find an older movie that you might have forgotten about, decide they like it, and play it over and over and over.
My five-year-old son has done just that with Eddie Murphy’s Daddy Day Care. What’s really interesting is that when I first saw this movie, I saw it through the eyes of a man without children. BUT NOT THIS TIME.
Now every time I watch this movie with my son, which is at least twice a week as of this writing. I get the underlying messages of the film that really motivate me as a father and entrepreneur
So I took the time to explain Eddy Murphy’s 5 Lessons from Dad’s Daycare That Fathers Can and Should Apply Immediately.
The Lie of Corporate Security
Eddie Murphy’s character in this film had a very important and lengthy career product development. He regularly answered his cell phone calls and endless e-mail calls. Most men who have worked in the corporate world can relate to this.
But then THE it happens (enter horror movie music). He and his best friend get fired in a way that shocks Charlie (Eddie’s character) and his business partner Phil. Have you ever experienced this? (The author of this post raises his hand).
Charlie must immediately accept the reality that his employer had the power to disrupt the work in which he had found his identity. And it didn’t matter how emotionally invested he was. It didn’t matter what his financial obligations were. And it didn’t even matter that he had brought the company success in the past. So what’s next?
What really matters
All of Charlie’s time was no longer consumed by meetings, presentations, emails and phone calls. So what is he doing now? So isn’t it obvious from the title? He came back into being Daddy. He had to read to his son at night, and even fell asleep in bed with him. (And people go AWWWWW!!)
Now, since this wasn’t the end of the movie, the importance of this quality time hadn’t hit him yet. But it helped him focus on home.
The joy of being present
So Charlie and Phil of Daddy’s decide to embark on the hilarious project of starting a Daddy Day Care. In which both their children participate.
With a mix of plenty of humor, dress up games, candy bars and sugar crashes and of course NAP TIME. The Dad’s day care takes shape. Now remember the scene I talked about earlier where Charlie read to his son and put him to sleep. Well, because of Charlie’s decision to start this home business, he and his son had a lot more time together.
Sidebar: This is one of those points where the film really started to speak to my own desires as a father and entrepreneur.
Charlie went from being an absent father due to his career to a present and engaged father due to a career decision. Which brings me to the next and extremely valuable point.
Since this is a family comedy, there’s plenty of fun to be had, along with the challenges of two very inexperienced men running a daycare while competing against the city’s large private academy.
Throughout their journey they encounter surprise inspections, sabotage and Charlie is even faced with the very difficult choice of returning to his old job.
Sidebar: To me this represents the struggle many men go through every day when they leave home and their children.
But something surprising happens when she briefly decides to return to the corporate world and abandon the innovator Dad’s day care. While in the boardroom, he was prompted to make a presentation by the very man who fired him long ago.
THE it finally hits him on the head. Realizing that the quality time he was able to spend with his son is so priceless, he abruptly excused himself and quickly went to pick up his son from the dreaded Academy he was fighting. And he made it DARING statement that Dad’s day care it was here to stay.
What you can for yourself from your children
As I watch this movie over and over again. I watch my son at the same time. I notice what parts of the movie make him laugh and realize I’m laughing at the same points. I notice that he is attracted to this movie more than other more popular animated movies. Then I realize that he already has the desire to be a dad when he grows up, and this movie speaks to a deep desire within him.
And guess what… I did the same thing when I was his age. Watching my son learn and grow brings out my own traits that I am responsible for developing or correcting in him.
My son has been such an amazingly big influence on how I’ve pursued my career and how I’ve come to understand the value of time. I am so thankful that he was tough enough to put up with the days I was an absent Father due to career choices. Yet with enough love to forget my absence the moments I came home. (She stops to catch her breath and not cry)
I hope this post motivates another Father to decide that those who are also more important, deserve more of his time than anything else.
