To Me, the Essence of Liberty and Freedom
I will never forget the first time I read the words of the Reverend Henry Ward Beecher in the ninth grade from the World Book Encyclopedia in 1960 west of Tyler, Texas. “Freedom is the soul’s right to breathe.” During my fifth year, when I was a curious and inquisitive child, after my dear mother had taught me to read, three of the first things I endeavored to read with enthusiasm were the Holy Bible, the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution of the United States. I found that these three documents are inextricably linked by the use of two very powerful words, liberty and freedom. My mother always emphasized that, unlike many millions of subjugated people in the world, I was born free and endowed with freedom under the law. And so I learned that free people must constantly honor the God-given life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness ordained by the Creator of nature. That is why I learned at an early age to thank the God of nature every day, before I rolled out of bed in the morning and laid down to sleep at night, for the freedom I have to do what brings good. and happiness to my life. More than anything, I thanked God for the freedom I had to choose good over evil, to preserve the freedom I and millions of other Americans had from restriction and dictatorship.
When I first read what Beecher wrote a hundred years ago, my mind was shaped the way I felt in the woods southwest of Chandler, Texas, when I set out with my squirrel rifle to hunt rabbit and squirrel for dinner. meat. The hills and valleys of acres of unfenced forest made me feel very special in a free country where no person or government could enslave and subjugate me to do and say according to the whims of a dictator. My soul has been graciously endowed by my creator with the essence of the alienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I have never forgotten the breath of freedom and freedom that my soul experienced that day and for many days after, as I savored it again and again, I wanted so much that others, my friends and my family, could feel the excitement of the sale. filled my soul
However, there are so many native Americans who have never experienced the freedom to work a job, any job, with the zeal to be free to earn a wage for doing something well or producing a product worth a wage. get paid for it. I fondly remember my father, a freelance welder from East Texas, telling me when I was five years old to move a pile of pig iron from one place to another in his shop, and when he did it to his specifications, I got a shiny quarter. from his hand to mine. That’s when I learned about the market economy and the value of a job well done. I could buy five large candies with that quarter or put it in my pocket to save. That same day, I told my father that I would work for him whenever he needed me, and every time I did a job for him, he paid me accordingly.
The freedom I had to choose to work, first to support myself and later my own family, appealed to me greatly, and the intense desire I had to use that freedom and liberty to do well in school, in athletics, and beyond. -curricular activities like the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program, which I was free to immerse myself in when I was thirteen years old, carried me through adulthood, my time in the military, and beyond. The only people who do not know the joy of freely choosing their own path are those who were born into a state of statist rule and weaned themselves off state control over them, as most Americans age 50 and under have experienced over the past 70 years. flight. Yet even after 1960, I had to tread carefully the waters of government interference in my life after JFK uttered the infamous words that seemed to heartily imply the duty of every American to wholeheartedly support the space race, “ask not what your country is can do for you, but what can you do for your country.”
The spirit and specter of statist Hegelian Marxism was encapsulated in Kennedy’s rhetoric. Instead of stating what James Madison humbly declared in 1787, that it is the duty of representative constitutional government to serve the people, and not the other way around, Kennedy declared that it is the duty of every American to serve the government in body and mind. The promise of the Civil Air Patrol Cadet program, which I chose to support at age 13, embodied fervent statist principles. I can still recite it, word for word. It read: “I promise to serve faithfully in the Civil Air Patrol Cadet program and to attend meetings regularly, participate regularly in unit activities, obey my officers, wear my uniform properly, and advance my education and training rapidly to prepare myself to serve to my community, state and nation.” The main thing I learned from CAP was to take orders and never question the orders I receive, the foundation for a successful career in the US Army. I enlisted in the USMC in 1971 and reached PFC from training Camp San Diego MCRD and later promoted to Sergeant E-5 in less than three years.
Soviet socialism, Marxism, and Marxist communist dialectics were supported by mindless configurations of nonsensical apologetics that made no sense at all when uttered. Soviet citizens were taught from 1918 until the fall of the Soviet Empire the same way German children were taught Hitler’s occult madness and mindless Nazi doctrine in Nazi public schools from 1934 to 1945 to create the propaganda illusion of the Nazi master race. Nazism and Marxism are fundamentally the same in application, as both are totalitarian and despotic in their control over the minds of the governed. Of course, militant revolution usually precedes the imposition of totalitarianism on a nation-state like Russia. However, despotism can be chosen as the ruling system, as was the case in Germany. You see, Hitler legally took control of Germany through the uninformed vote of the German people, through the lies and distorting propaganda of the Nazi forces who opposed freedom and liberty. In other words, uninformed and misguided voters can vote themselves into the tyrannical chains of virulent dictatorship.
To me, freedom and liberty are the joys of a person getting success from his own work and effort. There are hardly any American children today who can work menial jobs assigned to them by their parents, feel the sweat of their brows doing the work, experience the results and purpose of the work, and then receive money from their parents for completing the jobs in the form of money that they have full value. When I had done work for my father to his satisfaction, and received a quarter for it, I could use that quarter for any purpose I chose; to save it, buy five sticks or three comics. Most American children today in the 21st century are allowed to ask their parents for worthless money, handouts, for just being lazy kids. Most children do not have to do any work for the money they receive. For the last 70 years, statist federal and state governments have ingrained in the minds of those in power that people do not need to work for what they get from the government of the pods. They are taught to suck the pods of government doles vigorously and thoughtlessly.
Dr. Fred Schwartz first wrote in 1960, and then again in 1961, a best-selling book called “You Can Believe Communists (Be Communists). Since its second printing, the book has sold over a million copies. Dr. Schwartz states in the book,… The title of the book is not as surprising as it might seem… because in a sense communists (Marxists) can be trusted. They expressed their intentions, their beliefs, and even their methods in clear, unmistakable words in every language in the world. And they can be trusted to follow through on those goals unceasingly.” Are today’s Marxists in the 21st century different in their pragmatic goals and objectives from the Marxists of the Julius and Ethel Rosenberg era of the 1950s? Joseph McCarthy may have been somewhat contradictory in his efforts expose American Marxists during the 1950s, but in his Senate investigations he was far more fair than not. This period marked the beginning of a movement of popular espionage-loving Marxists who heralded the post-Khrushchev, “We’ll bury you” and the Cuban missile era with the cross with the “oh, they didn’t mean that at all” expedition.
The Communist Manifesto is as clear today in denying and refuting the freedoms and liberties proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence as it was when it was first written by Karl Marx in the 19th century. This economic rhetoric promulgated in Marx and Engle’s “Das Kapital” is just as incomprehensible, deceptive and nonsensical today as it was when it was adopted by the Russian Bolsheviks in the Russian Revolution of 1917.
As a human hand or foot becomes numb and insensitive over time through constant disuse, the collective consciousness and sense of the republic can eventually become dulled to what was once the excitement and fervor of freedom and liberty. Why? Freedom and liberty must be nurtured and kept alive and flourishing as a lovely public sentiment, as a tree or a flower must be constantly watered and fertilized. Free Americans must wake up every morning to thank Nature’s God for the liberties that were limited in the sacred law of the Ten Commandments and preserved through secular constitutional law in the Bill of Rights. They, every American, should pray daily that the blessings of liberty may be secured and preserved to them and their posterity as declared in the preamble to the U.S. Constitution.
