Muscles and Meditation?

As a skinny teenager, I tried most of the weight gain exercises and formulas on the market. Even though it was the pre-steroid era in the 1970s, I was still gobbling down various protein powders and foods in hopes of bulking up my broomstick frame.

It wasn’t until about 5 years later when I was in the military that I learned a few secrets to gaining muscle. Both come from books dealing with old concepts. One Yoga and Health book described the importance of meditation and the posture or sponge (savasana). Another book, The Strength of Samson, also mentioned prayer, self-hypnosis, and muscle recovery.

Now meditation is a method of mental withdrawal (pratyhara), concentration (dharana) and contemplation (dhyana). We do it all the time when we stare into space or pause to find answers within ourselves. Nothing relaxes me more than looking down a mountainside into a valley. Or looking across the lake (sometimes with a cold cider in hand). Prayer and self-hypnosis are more active. They help the mind focus on what it wants while still embracing the realm of withdrawal, concentration and contemplation.

You can take it a step further and focus on actual exercises. A few minutes of intense focus while exercising beats a few minutes of mindlessly flapping your limbs.

Now what about the relaxation side of the fitness formula? How often is it ever mentioned? When I was stationed at the base in Kingston, Ontario, I started practicing the Sponge position all day. I started doing it for a few minutes during lunch, after work and then before bed. I also made it a point to get more sleep by going to bed before 10pm every night. Even on some weekends.

The results? For the first time in years I started to really put on muscle. I gained over 25 kilos of muscle in 2 years. Most of that progress was the eight months I forced myself to rest more often. Here’s the real kicker: I cut my weightlifting down to two 45-minute sessions a week and still increased my bench press. The sessions were more intense, but I also gave myself more time to recover. And thanks to savasana, my relaxation was deeper and more effective.

Deep relaxation isn’t just about lying on your back or hunched over the TV. You are actually focusing on relaxing your muscles. Sometimes you can fall asleep. But often you just become very aware of your self. Sometimes you will feel your muscles twitch or your limb spasm on its own. That’s just tension leaving your body. It is a sign of deeper relaxation and a greater level of recovery.

Deeper relaxation means better hormonal balance, better muscle recovery, stronger muscles, and yes, more fat burning. Better relaxation means less tendency to dwell on your problems.

The cost of all these benefits? Just your time and a quiet place to practice.
