Does Asthma Cause Claustrophobia?

I am asthmatic and claustrophobic. Does being asthmatic necessarily mean you’ll also suffer from claustrophobia? Maybe. I read about it in the magazine Prevention. Recent studies seem to show that there is a striking link between asthma and psychological problems such as depression and anxiety. If you’ve ever been in a situation where you couldn’t breathe, then it’s not hard for the mind to extrapolate, “small space, no air.” In the last year or so, unfortunately, I’ve had some asthma-induced anxiety attacks. For example, during our trip to Russia, I got some bug. When we got back I was sick for a good 6 weeks with a cough, sinus problems etc. So the cough makes the asthma worse. I go to my allergist, take all kinds of stuff and still have trouble breathing. One night I wake up sweaty and gasping for breath.

I tried not to panic. I managed to slow my breathing and work my way out of it. But it was scary. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have a full blown panic attack. But back to asthma and claustrophobia. I tried to overcome the phobia. A few years ago, when we were in Rome (ah, another holiday drop), we decided to go to the top of St. Peter’s Basilica. Now, if you’ve ever been inside these old churches, you can only assume that the people who built them must have been 5’5″ and 150 pounds because all the sidewalks are very narrow and low. I decided to give it a try (my mantra is if God put it on this earth I want to see it).It was July and peak tourist season. As we start to climb you go in a spiral. So really all you see in front of you is 100 people in front of me and 100 behind me.

There is no escape! My dear, dear husband. How I love him so much. But what does he say? “That can’t be very good for your claustrophobia. Scenario: Wife reaches out and strangles husband. Life: “I love you too much dear.” As you approach the top of the dome, you now bend to the right as the staircase mimics the dome. Help!!! Fortunately, every so many steps there was a small crack in the window. I would stick my head out the window, take a deep breath and carry on. I made it to the top! Congratulations! Now back down… Over the years I’ve climbed the Great Pyramid of Giza, gone underground in the Valley of the Kings, gone into the caves of Borneo (the big ones) and had a Cat Scan. I can fight it, but I can’t beat it.

I have been getting allergy shots for the past 5 years. My asthma is almost, ALMOST, under control. And I’ve actually gotten better at being in small places. Kill Bill, forget it. I can’t watch. If a terrorist wants information from me, then threaten to put me in a small windowless cell and withhold my rescue inhaler… I will talk, I will talk!!!!! And no, no diving. Covered in water and breathing through a small tube? I do not think so…
