Book Summary: Foundation – Redefine Your Core, Conquer Back Pain – By Dr Eric Goodman and Peter Park
Exercise is important if you want to have energy and compete in this world. I enjoy boxing and wrestling along with weight training. Nothing will take you from a world-class first-class workout to thumb-sucking like a five-year-old more than throwing out your back. I do this once a year and my chiropractor recommended I read Foundation.
Why is this important to me?
Everyone I know has thrown out their back, regardless of whether they are world class athletes or 100 pounds overweight. A weak back is a problem for most people. When I was younger, I always had pain in my back and cervical spine. My neck was giving me headaches and the doctor said it was a degenerative disc. Interestingly, I eliminated cervical spine pain with the back bridge exercise that was introduced to me in wrestling and reinforced in Matt Fury’s Combat Conditioning routine.
Improper movement and movement that occurs from the lower back instead of the hips and legs is a major cause of lower back problems. The Foundation is addressing these issues and discussing ways to eliminate them.
Foundation is an excellent book that gets to the root of back pain. Testimonials are from professional athletes and back surgery patients. Let’s discuss what, why and how to eliminate back pain.
1. What is the cause? Since back pain affects everyone, including 19-year-old professional athletes or 70-year-old grandmothers, it makes sense to study it. Back pain revolves around improper movement. Eric and Peter developed a core workout to shift the focus from the abs and front of the body to the back and posterior chain. The reason our backs, hips and knees hurt so much is because we stress our bodies incorrectly.
2. Why is it important? The answer to this is obvious, but everyone seems to have a different answer on how to fix it. If you go to the doctor, they will tell you to freeze it and take medicine. The chiropractor will adjust you, which is usually effective if they are good, and the message therapist will work with the muscles to relax you. All these methods remove the symptoms but do not treat the root cause of the problem. If you don’t change your movement patterns, injuries will progress and low-grade inflammation will persist.
3. How does it work? Core training is a set of exercises that build the back and posterior chain. I am very excited about this as my hips, legs and lower back are extremely tight. When it’s warm, I can almost split, but my hips are locked like they’re fused together. For every exercise you do for the front, you should do four for the back. This is real because the evaluation of this program has shown me to be over built in the front and under built in the back. Foundation will teach you to properly use your most powerful muscles and create flexibility in the most important areas of your body.
The Foundation is a great book that I highly recommend you pick up. I’ve been working out for a week now and I can already feel the difference. My back is getting better and stronger. One thing that is emphasized in the book is the use of a styrofoam roller to loosen the legs and hips. I have to admit, I wasn’t hot on spending $40 on a piece of styrofoam, but it helped me beyond belief. Here’s an analogy – if you have a rubber band, it will stretch all the way, if you tie knots in the rubber band and try to stretch, the elasticity is maybe only 20% effective. I can tell you that when you first start the cylinder it hurts like hell, but the progress is very quick. To get an idea of how good these exercises are, go to YouTube “Foundation” and do one of the 12 minute videos that Eric and Pete give away for free. You will see the results.
I hope you found this short summary useful. The key to any new idea is to incorporate it into your daily routine until it becomes a habit. Habits are formed in just 21 days. One thing you can take away from this book is to eliminate back pain. The foundation will become my pre-workout choice because I know it works. I threw my back out and now it’s better and stronger with these routines.
