How VoIP Works — Busting Out of Long Distance Rates

VoIP is the latest advancement in audio communication technology and has a

various applications that make it useful. VoIP is short for Voice

over internet protocol and the way VoIP works is actually quite revolutionary

because it streamlines the process of sending analog audio signals through conversion

into a much easier digital form to transfer.

To understand how VoIP works, you need to understand the basic concept

behind normal analog audio communication because that is the predecessor

for VoIP. Analogue telephone calls are actually carried over fiber optic networks

digitizing your voice communication to send a signal over thousands

miles, but once it reaches its final destination (phone home or office, e.g

for example), the signal is converted back to analog.

During these calls the switches remain open even though there is dead air and

there is no conversation; the circuit is also open in both directions

even if only one side is talking and the other is listening. Not this one

terribly efficient and slows down the transmission of information

considerably.

Packet switching makes VoIP more efficient

VoIP works on a different principle – rather than circuit switching, data

packet switching sends and receives information only when you need it

in constant flux. It also sends information packets along anything open

channels are available rather than a dedicated line, which is much more

effective. The information is simply reassembled at the source.

The payload of each packet has an encoded destination that it specifies

the ultimate goal. When the computer at the other end receives all this

packets, reassembles the information into usable form. This form

sending audio data is extremely efficient because it always takes the cheapest

the route that is also the least congested.

Compressing information and using multiple paths to send

this information over the most efficient route allows audio to be sent through the packet

switching faster, much cheaper and more efficient. Number of calls

that can be sent is an order of magnitude higher than it was for more

traditional analog circuit switching systems.

For companies, savings on long-distance charges can be in the hundreds or

even thousands of dollars a year. If companies also hold large-scale conferences

calls, VoIP makes even more sense in combination with conference options such as

such as document sharing in systems offered by companies such as Voxwire and iVocalize.

Different types of VoIP calls are available

  • The most commonly used VoIP system is from one computer to another. To set up this type of service, you’ll need to have a sound card installed on both computers, along with microphones and an Internet connection. For practical purposes, you’ll want broadband or DSL – a dial-up modem will be so slow that the audio quality just won’t be as good. Other than that, all you need is a software package that can set you up with everything you need to use VoIP to make phone calls to anyone who also has the same system set up.
  • You can also invest in IP phones if you want something that looks just like your standard analog phones but with VoIP connectivity. These simply replace the old RJ-11 connectors with Ethernet (RJ-45) connectors. Hardware such as routers and the necessary software are built right in.
  • Analog Telephone Adapters (ATAs) allow you to connect a standard telephone to your computer’s Internet connection and use VoIP capabilities. ATA converts analog signals to digital so they can be properly transmitted over the Internet.
  • The newest option on the market is the Wi-Fi phone, which uses short-range VoIP Internet transmission to replace cell phone calls. Wi-Fi broadcasts over the radio spectrum to cover short-range areas for users in certain areas, and these “hot spots” have popped up all over the United States

As a result of VoIP, standard long distance charges may soon become a

a thing of the past. More and more customers are using VoIP and broadband

the connection enables easy and cheap (and also practical) phone production

internet calls, fewer individuals will be willing to pay high rates

make a phone call that they can make for free or next to nothing through their

computer.

VoIP will save you money on long distance

With VoIP, there are no per-minute charges, no setup fees, and no time charges

day’ or excess. That’s the great thing about VoIP plans. Just pay and

monthly fee and you can make all the calls you want through your computer for one

monthly fee. It’s so simple and elegant and it’s a solution that everyone has

he wanted and waited too long.

You don’t have to wait for a certain time of day of the week

phone calls with VoIP. It is also an advantage to be able to use yours

VoIP connection from anywhere – remember that you are not tied to a phone jack

use your number but internet connection so you can call from anywhere

many calling plans.

Some of the companies that offer excellent VoIP plans with unlimited calling

are listed below with their most popular options:

  • Vonage currently offers an unlimited VoIP package for $24.95 per month anywhere in the US or Canada. Includes voicemail, call forwarding, three-way calling, call waiting, and caller ID.
  • Package 8 can provide unlimited VoIP for $19.95 per month in the US and Canada with a variety of features such as call waiting and three-way calling, and can also provide you with videophone service for around $29.95 per month.
  • AT&T’s CallVantage provides the usual broadband calling in the US and Canada with voicemail, call waiting, etc., along with email, call recording and do not disturb, all for $29.99/month. You can also keep your phone number for life, no matter where you go – a great feature for someone who is on the move a lot.

VoIP in web conferencing packages

VoIP is used in almost all web conferencing services as an alternative to

standard conference calls and a look at these packages will give you an idea

of some ways to combine VoIP with add-ons such as whiteboards, document sharing

and video. For cheaper options, many companies may provide audio only

VoIP conference calls combined with text messaging and document sharing without

video.

Some companies that offer VoIP in web conferencing packages, separate from

video conferences are:

  • Voxwire it offers voice communication with features such as auto-queue, mute options, individual speaker settings and moderator control along with a “follow me” browser system so all participants can see the shared desktop. Two people can use VoIP for $9.95 per month, or up to ten in a conference environment for $29.95 per month.
  • VoiceCafé provides similar services with a wide range of options, varying from packages with VoIP capabilities for five people on a conference call to 500 on one conference call, all for a flat monthly fee. Prices vary depending on which package you choose, and there are several.
  • iVocalize offers VoIP along with Internet conferencing capabilities such as PowerPoint presentation capabilities and recording presentations for future playback. They also provide optional Unicode translation into thirteen languages. The most basic VoIP package starts at $10.00 per month, with prices gradually increasing depending on your needs and the number of participants in your conference calls.

Obviously, conference calls are just like standard long distance calls

calling will change significantly in the near future as VoIP changes

telephone service landscape. “Land lines” for long distance calls will be

will become obsolete over time as broadband becomes more common and makes VoIP fair

as common as any other type of phone call.

And with the greater portability of softphone options built into laptops and

the use of an ATA telephone adapter, the use of VoIP in an ordinary household will arrive

sooner rather than later.
